Traveling on the bus
with the group to Florence today, we passed through some beautiful countryside.
Italy is really rich agriculturally. Here is one of many marble quarries that have
provided material for artists over the years.
Sara has become
quite proficient in taking pictures. I say this, not because of the processed
results, but from the many clicks and replacement film rolls she has been loading into the
camera. I think she has a new hobby.
This is the 12th
century church that sits in the "Campo dei Miracoli" (Field of Miracles).
If you look at the larger picture, you may notice another famous building behind it.
Yes, the Leaning
Tower of Pisa. Begun in 1173, it started leaning before the third story was
completed. They went on to complete construction in 1350. It has continued to
lean (now 17.5 feet off vertical), and is closed to public entrance.
Here's how they are
attempting to keep the building stable while they work out a more permanent
solution. Notice the large stone placed on the left side to counter-balance the
weight.
The area is
encircled by a large wall, with pathways now filled with vendors trying to catch the
attention of visitors. The impact of a leaning tower on the city's economy is
readily apparent . . . and a good reason to keep it stable.
